How to Stay Happy and Maintain oral health During the lockdown period?

We have been quarantined and in lockdown for the first time in modern Indian history, physical and mental activity is at its minimum for many people. Taking care of our mind and body has never been so important, as we all got to make sure that we begin stronger once healthy life resumes. While we are engaged in working from home, reading books, exercising, or simply lazing around, we also are indulging ourselves in cooking and binge eating. While many folks do attempt to ensure proper nutrition, we frequently tend to ignore a critical part of our body: our teeth. Dental problems are often quite painful.

The dentists suggest that one should particularly avoid dental visits functioning out of hospitals to minimise exposure to infection while making space for other infected patients who need immediate care. Dental visits are recommended only in case of an emergency health issue, they advised.

Here are some ways to maintain your oral health during this lockdown:

How to stay positive and happy during the lockdown?

  • Keep yourself well-versed with COVID-19 updates and read-only from trusted sources.
  • Focus on positive news like an increase in the number of cured cases.
  • Keep yourself busy by making a daily schedule and follow it.
  • Revive old hobbies like painting, dancing, gardening or stitching.
  • Practice yoga or meditation to remain calm and beat stress.

How to maintain good oral hygiene?

Brush twice a day: It is said that the layer of plaque deposits in every 12 hours; thus, brushing twice helps to get rid of it. The plaque has many bacteria, and it can cause decay of teeth & gum problems.

Brush Carefully: You have to spend a minimum of 2- 3 minutes on brushing. Take some time, move the toothbrush in gentle, circular motions to get rid of plaque.

Use Fluoride Toothpaste: Fluoride is absorbed into the enamel and helps to repair it by replenishing the lost calcium and phosphorus required to make your teeth strong.

Floss your teeth daily: Flossing helps clean in-between the teeth. If you don’t floss regularly, you seem to be in danger with 2 major dental issues like Gingivitis and Cavities. Hence, flossing is crucial for a healthy mouth.

Bound sugary and acidic food: Bacteria in your mouth use sugar from food and drinks to produce acids that dissolve and damage the teeth. These acids cause cavities (tooth decay). Frequent snacking on foods high in sugar increases the amount of time your teeth are exposed to the dissolving effects of varied acids. The foremost common source of liquid sugar is soft drinks, sports drinks, energy drinks and juices. Additionally, these drinks have high levels of acids which will cause a cavity.

Avoid sticky foods: “Sticky foods” means the long-lasting sources of sugar, like hard candies, breath mints and lollipops. These also are linked to the cavity. So avoiding them is essential.

Drink water: Water helps you keep the mouth clean and fight xerostomia. Water also washes away the leftover food that cavity-causing bacteria are trying to find. It also dilutes the acids produced by the bacteria.

Keep an emergency kit ready: It is sensible to keep some painkillers handy just in case you suffer from dental pain. Paracetamol, co-codamol and ibuprofen (as long as not displaying Covid-19 symptoms) are all effective analgesics for dental anxiety. You’ll also need some filling dental kit (available from most pharmacies and supermarkets) just in case a filling or crown comes out, and you would like to cement it temporarily.

Until and unless there is no emergency, we advise you to stay at home. Home quarantine is the only way to prevent this pandemic outspread of Covid 19.
